Who Do You Think You Are - and other Fears of Living on Purpose

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

This quote is from Marianne Williamson’s book, A Return to Love. This quote has always been an inspiration to me. Becoming who we were truly meant to BE is both an exhilarating and challenging process. I find myself hanging out in the “who-do-you-think-you-are” lounge from time to time.

Negative thoughts creep up on us and zap our energy, down play our talents and sabotage our creativity. It’s easy to ask; who DO I think I am? Maybe I shouldn’t. Maybe I couldn’t. What if I fail? What if I succeed? What if my life could be even bigger than I ever imagined? What will I do then? Will my friends and family think I’m too big for my britches? What will it be like when I get there? The unknown can keep us on lockdown.

It’s easier when we release the burden of carrying that weight on our own. When we stop and surrender to the Divine (God/Spirit/Source/Universe…call it what you will) knowing that thy will be done, not my will be done. How free do you feel when you realize you’re merely a vessel - a mere channel for the greatness of the Divine energy to flow through?

Whether you’re an actor, a writer, a parent, a teacher, a coach, a businessperson of high integrity, a dog walker or grocery checker, you serve a Divine purpose on this planet. You have unique talents and gifts that ONLY you can provide in this world. Without your piece of art, your words of inspiration, your constant presence, your witty comeback, and your sweet smile – the world wouldn’t be as colorful a place.

Your purpose here is to help shift the puzzle pieces between you and I and him and her and we and thee…Each step you take, each hand you shake, each smile you share, each laugh, each tear, each experience you encounter with another is a SHARED experience. You can’t move (emotionally or physically) without moving another.

So let’s push through our fears, stop standing still, quit playing small, and really start living! Let’s put ourselves out there, ask for what we want, and make requests for what we believe in. Let’s grab life by the hand and dance our asses off! Let’s create a life with passion and purpose and remember that at our core we are DIVINE.

What if we woke up everyday and just acknowledged that? How differently would we treat ourselves and therefore treat others? When we courageously step forward into our true selves, we become an example and a model for others. As we wake up and light our fire, we help others turn their sparks into flames. Hell, (no pun intended) let’s turn this place into a burning inferno! OK? No more sleepwalking, no more procrastinating, no more waiting till this is ready or that is just so. Let’s just go kick some ass!

What are you waiting for?

Peace and no more hiding (me neither),
Kam

PS...thanks Pam, big hug
