Passionate Theme of the day: Potential
“You have available to you, right now, a powerful supercomputer. This powerful tool has been used through-out history to take people from rags to riches, from poverty and obscurity to success and fame, from unhappiness and frustration to joy and self-fulfillment, and it can do the same for you.” -Brian Tracy
“Your past is not your potential. In any hour you can choose to liberate the future.” -Marilyn Ferguson
“The potential of the average person is like a huge ocean unsailed, a new continent unexplored, a world of possibilities waiting to be released and channeled toward some great good.” -Brian Tracy
As this is the first week of classes at the university I teach for, I’ve been thinking a lot about potential. How there is so much potential in what I can communicate and educate and facilitate to the students over the course of the next 15 weeks.
I also got to thinking about how MUCH potential each of the students in my classes have. I’m knocked out by the limitless opportunities they have available to them in this day of modern technology and human awareness.
My question is…do they know? Do they realize how many opportunities to rise up and be GREAT they are afforded? Will they seek higher things and ask questions of those that are uninspiring and disaffected? This opportunity to teach full-time is challenging me to up my own game.
What is my true potential as an instructor? How can I make the (sometimes boring theory) material I have to cover, more interesting, exciting and understandable? How can I mix up my lectures, multi-media presentations, videos and guest speakers so that the class is tuned-in with me?
This also got me thinking about how small we let ourselves show up from day to day. Today I covered the basics of what a degree in communications can provide (potential career opportunities). We went through my resume and I shared from personal experience that our career track doesn’t have to follow a straight line. It also reminded me that I KNOW my stuff and that I’ve done some pretty cool things.
But what things could I have accomplished had I known more? Had I been made aware of international travel opportunities to discover more about other cultures? Had I been less afraid to leave the safety of my own hometown?
Today I’m curious if you’re living up to your fullest potential and how high are you willing to set the bar? Each time I think I’m playing full-out, something or someone is sent to remind me (see my James Ray post) that I can always up my game. I can think bigger. More expansive for my life.
How BIG are you thinking for your life? Do you need to re-boot your “super-computer” and upgrade to “You 2.0”? What might life look like if you were to really stretch yourself? In your career? In your relationships? In how you show up in your community? With your family? With your friends? With your relationship with spirit? With your body?
As the weekend rolls near, let’s take some time to get crystal clear on how BIG we’re showing up. Are we playing in the BIG leagues or are we hanging out in the minors wishing and hoping we’ll make it to the show?
Let’s set our intention to be used as a channel for the greatest good in this world. Let’s bring our A game this year, OK? The first month of 2007 is coming to a close. Are you living up to your fullest potential?
No more hmm’ing and haw’ing,
Professor KK
