Need Comfort Food? Try a Carbon Leaf

Passionate Theme of the Day: Comfort

My life is open wide
The more you live, the less you will die.
Outside, floating free,
I’m finally open to see…
Could you be any more comfort to me? ~"Comfort“ by Carbon Leaf

It’s no secret to that I’ve been a little, shall we say, stuck lately? A little “cosmically constipated”. My creative juju ain’t been flowing. My minds been cluttered. The weather is making me cagey. Like I want to crawl out of my own skin. It’s been cold and gray. And cold. Did I mention gray?

Between that and the transition of my new position into teaching full-time, and a recent revelation regarding an old limiting belief I’ve been holding onto, well…you can imagine…that downward spiral had me D-O-W-N. And those who know me or read the PMP blog regularly know, Kammie don’t dig DOWN!!

Friday found me a little emotional and I went into the office to grade papers and meet with a couple of students. As I drove in I was like, “GOD! What besides the instant onset of spring can help perk me up this weekend?” The first thing that came to my mind was the word MUSIC. Ahhh, my old melodic, poetic and magical friend…music. I knew I needed to see a live show somehow.

My office is located in the radio station studio area on our campus. After grading and chatting and receiving my 2nd surprise set of chocolate covered strawberries from yet another student (yummy…my favorite treat and lovely unexpected gift from the Universe) a colleague came in and invited me into the conference room. She said a band that was playing in town tonight was here to interview and record an acoustic session. Since the studio was too small for all of them, they were using the conference room across from my office.

Umm…excuse me. Wasn’t it a few hours ago that I said I needed to hear some LIVE music? WOW! That’s fast actin’ manifestation if I ever saw it. I was happy to have the hour or so distraction from “work” and enjoyed the songwriting and musical synchronicities of Carbon Leaf. I didn’t recognize the name of the group, but once they began playing, I instantly recognized Life Less Ordinary, Learn to Fly and Comfort from the campus airwaves.

Even cooler, a friend of mine had left a message earlier that day saying she would be down on Delmar Ave. and would I like to meet her for dinner and a drink? I asked the guys where they were playing that night and they said, “The Duck Room at Blueberry Hill” (on Delmar Ave. where my friend would be). I asked if the show was sold out and they said yes, but they’d be happy to put me and a friend on the list. Too cool!

I love it when I get out of my own way and the Universe shapes up a perfectly entertaining evening for me. All I had to do was put it out there. Why am I sharing this little story with you? Because when I get too focused on “what should be” and the ex-control freak in me takes over - all that’s required for a shift to occur, is simply backing off, loosening the death grip on the reigns, and letting go. Maybe this is true for you too?

All we need to do is state our intention, focus our sights on THAT which we desire and step into the feeling that we’re already “there”. Another shift I needed (and may serve as a reminder for you) was to get PRESENT. I’ve been a tad future focused lately and also grieving a little about a past connection that isn’t serving my current purpose.

When we get present and BE in the moment, it all falls into FLOW and we don’t have to put forth much effort at all. THAT is the way life is supposed to be. One sweet synchronicity at a time. A cosmic connection with new friends. A box of chocolate covered strawberries (or 2!). A comment from a stranger. A compliment from a co-worker. An extended hand when you need it. In the here & NOW.

I’m tickling the keyboard and happy to feel the creative mojo flowing again, and I want to thank Barry, Terry, Carter, Jordan & Cliff for being a “Comfort” to me. I know they didn’t know it, but that extended invitation to their show was the breath of springtime sunshine I needed to power thru this funkalicious, wintery-mix of a mood.

These guys were also so down-to-earth, they stayed after the show and shook all their fans hands, autographed t-shirts and CD’s and smiled for every photograph they were asked for. They were genuinely interested in their fans (something you don’t see often these days), asking each one their name and really talking with them. Very cool and super PASSIONATE people!

I love the cosmic collaboration they share on stage and I especially dug the older, blue grassy-mountain-rock tunes when the whole crowd was clapping and stomping and vibe-ing in unison. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…being a musician must be the freakin’ COOLEST gig! Since I can’t play the guitar, I’ll have to settle for scribing and vibing from my post here at the PMP blog.

When you need comfort, where do you seek it? Do you have a special anecdote or home-made remedy to support and soothe your soul? Drop a comment and let us know!

Until the first buds of spring bloom…I’ll keep on trying to Learn to Fly…so I can really soar this season.

Love & Light,
Kam the Comfort Queen
