Music is My Religion: We’re all Wild Angels Indeed

Passionate Theme of the Day: Music Soul Food

“To remember the words
That we are wild angels
Believing in our childhood dreams
We’re just trying to find our way back to
The source of the stream
We are wild and free” ~ Martin Sexton

Went to the Martin Sexton concert Sat. night. I first came across Martin’s music a few years back when he opened for John Mayer here in St. Louis. He was giving away a 3 song sampler after the show and I was hooked from the first note.

Martin’s latest CD is Seeds . It’s completely different from his other CD’s. Martin’s previous music brings us along his vagabond-heart of a journey of love, loss, self-awareness, being the “Blacksheep” of the family, and always reminds us that the “Jouney” IS the destination.

This new CD is fresh, colorful and juicy -like a road side produce stand on a country road. Martin’s met the love of his life, moved to the country, got married and has completely owned being “Happy”.

I’ve followed him musically along his passionate path, and want to share the words to his song Wild Angels with you. So many people feel a void in their heart. A sense of longing, loss, or depression around the all mighty questions, “Why am I here?”, “What is my purpose in this world?”, “What do I possibly have to offer?”.

Martin declares:

“That we are wild angels
Believing in our childhood dreams
We’re just trying to find our way back to
The source of the stream
We are wild and free”

This song is a declaration of freedom and personal strength. We all have a song in our hearts that ONLY we can bring to the world. What’s stopping YOU from singing yours? Fear? Lack of confidence? Lack of resources? Intimidation? Being stuck in a bad job? Bad relationship? Bad environment?

Well it’s high time to grab life by the hand and get on down the road isn’t’ it? How much longer can you afford to stifle your song? What people, places, circumstances are waiting for YOU to step up and serve?

Whether you’re an artist, a musician, a carpenter or a bricklayer, YOU have a gift that ONLY you can bring forth into this world. You were hand picked off the Divine vine to carry out your purpose to serve the greater good. If the Universe were a picture, you are the ONLY shade of YOU. No other star shines quite the same color as you. The picture can’t be complete if you play small, hide your light, or stifle your energy.

What do you need to do in order to step into your authentic self today?

If you’ve lost your luster, are sick and tired of being sick and tired, or can’t remember what the hell it is you’re really here for, I encourage you to snap out of it! Turn back the hands of time and remember what it was that really got your motor going as a kid. Was it painting? Drawing with your Etch-a-Sketch? Building sandcastles? Shooting movies on the wall with a flashlight and pages from a coloring book?

How about when you were a teenager? Were you into re-designing your room every other month (I was…a sure fire sign I love change)? Were you the social coordinator of your group (maybe you’re destined to be an event planner)? Did you love juggling school and after school activities and a part-time job? Were you an athlete and now you’re a couch potato?

Dig deep and excavate that song that still lives within you. If you think you’re too old, too fat, too tired, too busy or too sad…you probably are. But get over it already! Shift your focus and your energy on what your world would look like if you realized that YOU are indeed a Wild Angel.  And only YOU can bring your unique light into this world. Please stop hiding. Please stop criticizing. Please stop whining and crying.

Nike says it best, “Just DO it”! Spread your wings and fly. Get up off the couch and jump. Remove yourself from your shackles of fear and self-doubt. Consider it your duty to bring your gift out into the light. Even if you don’t feel like shining some days, shine on anyway! Martin had days when he didn’t feel like singing and he sang anyway.

Mend your broken wings and fly. Dig deep and be brave. Step forth couragesly and BE who it is you really are intended to be in this world.

This song that is reminiscent of a back road revival choir (with Martin doing ALL the voices in the background as well), inspired me to write this post to inspire you. And I can testify, hearing this CD live was a religious experience!

The studio version of these songs pale in comparison to the effect Martin’s beautiful instrument of a voice can deliver in person. If he’s rolling through your town you should definitely go see him.

I leave you with my initial inspiration… the lovely words of Martin Sexton’s Wild Angels:

Even when the desert sands roll with thunder
Even when I know it’s all for gasoline
Even when the hole in my head lets me wonder it
I know I sing because I must

Even when the truth waters down way too quickly
Even when the storm blows down in New Orleans
I will still be dreamin when I know why this happens
But I know I love you and I trust

We are born with all this music in our heart
We tend forget a little each day right from the start
In a dream I rolled on back the clock and found another way
To remember the words

That we are wild angels
Believing in our childhood dreams
We’re just trying to find our way back to
The source of the stream
We are wild and free

Even like the hills these songs they last forever
Even though the singer will be forgotten in good time
Even that a song can unify or move mountains
This I cry we sing because we must

We all love the sound of music in our head
And feel the joy and pain cause we aint dead
We have the power and the duty and the means to change the world
And to remember the words

Cause we are wild angels
Sent down from our childhood dreams
And we’re just trying to get ourselves back to the source of the stream
We are wild and we are free

It’s where we want to be
Come and join us on the journey down the winding road
Doesn’t matter what you fear cause we are bold
We got the light inside us of the universe
Gonna let it flow like a raging river

Shine on Wild Angels, shine on…
