Passionate Theme of the Day: Rest
“Rest: the sweet sauce of labor” ~Plutarch
“Take rest; a field that has rested gives a bountiful crop.” ~Ovid“Sometimes the most urgent thing you can possibly do is take a complete rest” ~Ashleigh Brilliant
Here I sit at the keyboard awaiting some magical musings and raucous ramblings to filter through my fingertips for your amusement, inspiration or whatever it is you usually tune in for.
Yet as the days roll on…I find myself…I hate to say it…STUCK! Who knew that one year into the game of blogging, I’d hit a wall? I have so much to say, yet am having trouble finding the words to say it. I don’t want to write just for the purpose of posting, yet I want to jump start the momentum. I was on such a roll. I felt tuned-in, turned-on and tapped-in!! Yet lately when it comes to writing, I just feel tired. It hurts me to say it.
What do artists do when they can’t see in color anymore? How do musicians survive when they can’t hear the music in their heads? What do knitters do when they can’t stand the sight of one more afghan? It’s as if my batteries aren’t got no more juice.
So I dive back into my coaching tool kit. I go into a place we call positive self regard. And extreme self-care. I begin to LISTEN to what my body AND spirit is telling me. They are telling me to REST.
I’ve got a cool tool I’ve been using lately to really strengthen my amplification to my intuition. They are a set of cards by bestselling author and six-sensory spiritual teacher, Sonia Choquette. Their called the Ask Your Guides cards, and they come with a little guidebook that tells you more about each card. The cards themselves are beautifully designed with images and colors that reflect each topic perfectly.
Each night before I go to bed, I close my eyes and shuffle the cards and simply focus on being open to receive ANY guidance that spirit sends my way. Last night, feeling frustrated and cosmically constipated, I pulled the Rest/Holy Spirit card.
Here’s what the guides had to tell me:
“Our culturally perverse notion that doing, doing, doing is the correct use of time, and that doing nothing is a complete waste of time, has indeed made us a sick society. Your overwhelming desire to back off from this whirlwind of activity and take a break – even throw in the towel all together – isn’t crazy or unrealistic. It’s a direct summons from the Holy Spirit to withdraw your attention from the outer world and reconnect with your soul….
Listen to the Holy Spirit and open your heart to its direction. Take lots of time to be alone, and get in touch with your soul. Withdrawing from the world through contemplation, meditation, or even sabbatical is the most powerful way to use your time right now. Your guide’s message: Make time for yourself.”
WOW! Right? Here I was feeling guilty, frustrated and even beating myself up a bit for feeling lazy, unmotivated and at times just plain TIRED! Yet here my soul is just trying to take a break! To catch its breath. To stop and smell the roses. I’ve climbed some pretty high mental mountains over the past year or two, and perhaps it’s just going to take a little longer to get acclimated to the new altitude than my alter-EGO, “Over-Achiever Girl” would like.
Funny cuz looking back I can see that the same old tendencies to push vs. attract to me still creep in from time to time. Yes, I’ve learned much, but I can see how being “Little Miss Perfect” in high school can feel a lot like yesterday vs. a couple of decades ago. Days when I was editor of the yearbook and newspaper. A captain on the dance team. Chairperson for the prom. Had the football player boyfriend. Worked a part time job and still managed a decent GPA. No wonder my health suffered and I dropped 20lbs. from IBS (I won’t give ya the details, but it ain’t sexy). Those were the days when I was doing more and BEing less. (Hell, let’s be honest…I didn’t know what BEING was back then!)
With this post I promise to listen to my body, my spirit and my guides. If it’s REST and nourishment I need, then so be it! The OA and LMP in me will just have to learn to chiiillllll out. Because current day Kammie knows a little bit more about tuning in and listening to that whisper. That voice inside that is telling me it’s OK, life is a marathon, not a sprint. I don’t have to hurry. Everything is AS it SHOULD be.
What ways can you listen to your spirit whisper? How can you REST if that is the guidance you’re being given? What OLD ways of being can you let go of in order to up your game? What ways are you nourishing your spirit when your busy doing?
Peace & chillaxin’ vibes to you,
Kam

Hey stranger~
I was just thinking I hadn’t seen you round in a little while...thanks for the PERFECT analogy!
I’m a really visual person and THAT rocket vs. locomotive example really hit home.
Thanks for the insight and for swinging on thru…
Hope all is well with YOU!

Reading your post today Kammie...I can’t help but think of the Taoist tenet “wu wei,” that involves knowing when to act and when not to act. The idea goes that by taking the path of “actionless action,” everything gets done. I know this can be a wild notion for our western minds to grasp. Congratulations on knowing when to “cool your jets” and honor yourself (and where you’re at). I know that it can take tremendous courage and strength sometimes to “just be.” I support you fully in your decision.

Raymond,
You’re not the Zenchill guy for nothing! Thank you SO much for your support, encouragement and wisdom resource of the Taoist “wu wei”...I like the term “actionless action”...something for me to chew on for a while...mmmm
Thanks again for your support Ray, I always appreciate your insights.

Hi Kammie,
I have been reading your writing for some time now, but don’t think I have ever left a comment before. But THIS post, so thoroughly personal, vulnerable and authentic really inspired me to write.
It is so hard for us Superwomen to do nothing… but sometimes that is exactly what we need to do. I like to liken it to the difference between a giant surf - waves stirring up all the sand and silt; and a calm, clear sea. When the water gets still and calm, the sediment sinks to the bottom and we can see clearly… and much, much further.
I’ve been working on this myself over the past couple of months - giving myself permission to let go and get still. It’s working a treat!
Good luck - I am sure when you reemerge you’ll be energised and inspired!

Karen~
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I am happy you enjoyed the post...sometimes I find “letting it all hang out” feels better than keeping it in!
I love your analogy about the ocean and clear calm water...as I’m very visual, this helps to re-infornce ideas for me. Thank YOU for that
Feel free to drop some insights anytime you feel drawn to, we love the continuing dialogue.
Stay passionate,
Kam

What an inspiring post, Kammie. And you are learning this lesson at a younger age than I did.
Maybe we wouldn’t have so much “keeping up with the blogging Jones-es” if we took a rest and only blogged when it came from a place of desire instead of obligation (I’m speaking for myself here.) There’s inherent pressure in the blogging world to post frequently . . . we all have to make our own choices.
Thank you for sharing so transparently.

Aw Debbie,
So sweet of you to stop by. Thank you for your support and if I am half as wise as you, that’s a HUGE compliment!
It’s the weirdest thing...this just BEING and I’m trying to observe the resisitance/hesitancy/fizzle-ness vs. judging it, becauase I know that will only bring me more of the same.
Thanks again for stopping by and saying hello…

The rocket is an exciting awe inspiring invention, full of power and wonder. It spews fire and flies very fast but it doesn’t last very long, doesn’t carry much payload and can easily burn up and crash. Locomotives on the other hand are not sexy or fast, by todays standards, but they carry large loads make frequent stops to refuel, reload and last a very long time. And you sure don’t want to get in one’s way.
